Formerly known as the Caribbean National Forest and the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system, El Yunque is a cloud forest and is located southeast of San Juan. El Yunque is divided into 4 forests; the Tabonuco Forest, the Palo Colorado Forest, the Palma Sierra Forest, and the En Las Nubes Forest. El Yunque is also the most visited attraction in Puerto Rico, with 600,000 visitors per year and has over 240 species of trees and plants, 26 of those found nowhere else in the world. The El Yunque rainforest also receives 240 in. of rain per year and is 29,000 acres. Overall, the El Yunque rainforest thrives with plants and animals and is very popular amongst Puerto Ricans.
